Here is a meeting recap for those students who missed the meeting - (PARENTS PLEASE PRINT FOR YOUR CHILD AND/OR HAVE THEM READ THIS INFO - if you click on the blog title you can print just this post from the site):
Personalized steno pads ("Reporter's Notebooks") were handed out to new staffers (and old ones who "misplaced" theirs from last year...) as well as North Park News green folders so everyone can keep their newspaper-related materials organized. (if you need one or both, please leave a comment below this blog on the website and I will get one/them for you).
We did not have enough time to visit Mrs. Wiseman's room to get oriented with the new iMac computer that we will have access to for photos and possibly layout/newspaper design - so that will wait until perhaps next meeting.
We have decided to accept a few 4th grade interns to our staff and they will be doing light writing, picture-taking and perhaps poll-compiling, to get an introduction to newspaper production. they will be added to the roster as soon as I receive everyone's parent signature forms.
The staff roster (still a work in progress until our editors have been chosen) is located on the website sidebar - the roster is password-protected since it contains phone numbers and email addresses and such - email [email protected] if you do not have or know the password.
Editorial staff position interviews have been ongoing and will continue next week - we hope to announce those positions in a week or so.
We will also have a field trip to The Signal newspaper this year (again) - date to be announced; and will try (again) to have a field trip/lesson session at the Apple Store for our photographers (although all are welcome to come) - date to be announced later also.
Luke D. took Press Pass photos of staffers and I will try to get those out in a week or so (if you need your picture taken please leave a comment below this blog on the website and I'll coordinate with Luke for a make-up session).
We talked about story ideas and where to find them: the North Park school site (www.npelementary.weebly.com) has a Twitter feed that lists all of the Tuesday Knight News newsletter links that has upcoming events listed; the PTA website is also a good resource (linked on the website page above), and Mrs. McCarty (front office manager) has lots of info as to what is upcoming (plays, assemblies, etc.).
Story ideas for the first issue were discussed and there is a link on the website that you can add to (we can also use this as an assignment organizer) and it has info as to whether or not a photo will need to be taken (and buy whom), so please check that.
Possible story ideas: new student body officers/elections; Red Ribbon week (Mia P.); Changes in our school since last year - bigger 5th classrooms, missing map in front, etc (Braden O.); 6th grade fundrasier info; Teacher Spotlight; Reflections.
Many of these will need pictures taken, and also the biggest "Photo Op" of the year is next week: the Halloween parade! Also, Red Ribbon week activities, Reflections (Oct 22). if you plan to take pictures, please make sure you ask your teacher first and have your press pass on when out of class, so adults/school staff can identify you as a newspaper person "on assignment."
